Theatre Alphonse Desjardins
Specific case study: Innovative lighting system for a multifunctional auditorium
The auditorium at Théâtre Alphonse Desjardins is distinguished by its versatility and its ability to host various types of events thanks to its adjustable configurations and geometry. Whether for performances or standing events, lighting and its control play a crucial role in meeting multiple requirements and constraints.
Lighting concept
One of the main objectives for the auditorium's lighting was to integrate it in the least intrusive manner possible, in order to preserve the architectural purity. Always attempting to hide the fixtures, enjoying the effects without seeing the sources. Keeping the mystery! This ideology was at the heart of the concept and was as important for the users of the space as it was for the performers on stage. To achieve this, we opted for a solution with linear fixtures camouflaged within the suspended architectural structures. We could never have achieved the same effect with more conventional cylindrical round fixtures. Equipped with a retractable balcony, the auditorium offers flexibility, and the use of addressable linear fixtures delivers essential uniformity, allowing adaptation to various presentations and situations.
Innovations and technical challenges
- Architectural Integration: Integrating the fixtures into the angled acoustic ceilings and parabolic louvers reduced perceived glare while maintaining a clean aesthetic.
- Flexibility of Use: The auditorium is equipped with multiple control points, allowing easy reconfiguration of the lighting according to different arrangements, such as cabaret style without bleachers.
Lighting control systems
The building incorporates three lighting control systems that communicate and interact with each other:
1. Architectural lighting system: Managed by an intelligent relay panel connected to the Internet.
2. Main auditorium lighting system: Operates through DMX programming, facilitating the integration of room and stage controls.
3. Stage lighting system: Controlled by various stage lighting consoles located in the control room.
These systems allow flexible and personalized lighting management, meeting the specific needs of users, whether they are professional technicians or casual users.
